The New GDPR Laws

The New GDPR Laws

The New GDPR Laws, and How They Affect You.

No doubt you’ll have seen the media coverage of the General Data Protection Regulation, and you may be wondering how this will affect you and the way we store your personal data.

We thought we’d give you a bit of a break down of the new rules and regulations.

If you have any additional questions or would like to know what information we hold, please give one of our team a call.

What’s it all about?

The EU is looking to bring data protection regulation into the modern era, where we have found that data is used in ways that we really could not have predicted almost 20 years ago when the original Data Protection Act was brought into law by the UK Government.

Of key importance to the citizens of the EU, which still includes the UK for the time being, is the far greater say it gives you over how your information is to be used.

There is also going to be much tougher sanctions handed out to many companies who don’t comply with the new regulations, which can only really be considered a positive when you look at the number of data leaks we’ve seen over the past few years.

Who does it apply to?

Basically, the new regulation applies to any company or organisation that handles the personal data of anyone living in the EU. Regardless of it being a ‘controller’ or ‘processor’ of the data, they must abide by the new laws.

The regulation applies to any company that handles the personal data of EU citizens, even if the company itself is not based within the EU.

The implications of a data breach.

In the case of a data breach, the company involved must take certain steps as laid out in the GDPR, the first of which is to inform the people who have been affected, and then inform the data protection authorities in the country of those affected.

This initial contact has to occur within 72 hours of the company finding out about the breach and must include as much information as possible regarding the breach. The authorities will be wanting to know exactly how many people have been affected by the breach, the potential consequences and any and all measures you’ve taken to counter it.

The 72-hour time limit that companies who hold EU citizen data must comply with in the event of a data breach is non-negotiable, failure to meet the deadline could mean a penalty fine of up to 2% of the companies worldwide annual revenue, or £10 million.

So, for companies who hold personal data on EU citizens, the rules have become a lot tighter, but it also means that your data is safer now than it ever has been.

EMS do not share any data with third parties and you can be assured that any data we hold is kept safe.

Confused about what can be recycled?

Confused about what can be recycled?

The things people wrongly assume they can recycle

As a nation, we are now more aware about the damage that we are causing to our planet through the use and disposal of plastic waste.

We are all encouraged to recycle as much as possible but we are still increasingly confused about the types of things that can be recycled. Especially when it comes to plastics.

Here at EMS we want to make things as clear as possible for our customers in Exeter and surrounding areas.

Confusion surrounding plastic recycling

A recent poll published by the Guardian newspaper unearthed just how confused us Britons are about plastic recycling and recycling in general.

The poll found that most of us believe that we can recycle plastics, such as plastic soap dispenser tops, and other items such as used kitchen roll and even wrapping paper. When in fact, none of these things can be recycled in our general household waste bins!

Although eight out of 10 of us now believe that recycling makes a huge difference to the environment, we are still confused about what we can and cannot recycle.

This is simply due to a lack of misunderstanding and misinformation. Ultimately, what this results in is more harm to our planet.

When it comes to recycling on a larger scale we can make things simple for you.

We’ve made a list to help clarify things.

When hiring a skip from EMS you are also hiring our extensive knowledge and expertise.

If there’s something not listed that you’d like to include in your skip please give one of our experts a call. We’re always available to help.

What can be recycled?

Cardboard recycling – Egg boxes, cereal boxes, toilet roll tubes etc

Glass recycling –glass bottles, jars, Windows, Windscreens

Plastic recycling – HDPE(drainage piping/road barriers), LDPE, Farm Plastic, UPVC Window Frames, PET Bags etc

Wood – Palets, off cuts and all general wood waste

Metal – Ferrous and non ferrous

Garden and Green waste – Grass cuttings, leaves and weeds, Christmas trees etc

Inert Waste – Soil and stone

What needs to be done?

Education and information are key, as well as clear and informative packaging.

All plastic packaging should clearly state if it can be recycled, and if not, where it is best placed after use.

Local councils can also play a huge role in alerting people to the relevant information about what items can be recycled, and where they can be recycled.

What is truly shocking is that 79 percent of all plastic waste is still with us, as we are unable to recycle and reuse this type of plastic.

The very clear message here is that so much more needs to be done to ensure that, eventually, we are able to recycle all plastic waste.

Since 2012, Stuart Properties, the commercial property division of Stuart Partners, has provided quality commercial space for business all over the south west. Purchased in November 2017, the latest addition to the portfolio is Redlake Trading Estate, which is home to 10 bustling businesses.

The Redlake Trading Estate community has social impact at its heart, with charities and social enterprises occupying much of the space.

Here, we take a look at two of the businesses and how they serve their communities.

The Clay Factory

The Clay Factory has turned an old industrial site into a community hub for businesses, organisations, arts, food and events.

Surrounded by an inspiring landscape, its vibrant community of artists, startups and established businesses have fostered a creative, ambitious atmosphere.

Using its profits to make a social impact, it aids the good work of fellow Redlake Trading Estate tenant, The Eddystone Trust.

The Eddystone Trust

From safer sex resources to peer support and counselling, The Eddystone Trust provides heartfelt assistance to anyone affected by HIV across the South West.

It works hard to challenge the stigma, discrimination and misinformation that often comes with HIV and sexual health.

If someone is affected by HIV, The Eddystone Trust works with them to improve their quality of life. You can learn more about The Eddystone Trust here.

This is just a snapshot of daily life at Redlake Industrial Estate.

Stuarts are Volvo Truck Dealer of the Year 2018

We at Stuarts Truck & Bus are the proud winners of the 2018 Volvo Truck Dealer of the Year award, serving the West Country as the region’s only authorised dealer for Volvo trucks.

We couple the sale of our vehicles with the provision of service and repair to all other makes, including trailers, as we aim to provide the same great service to all across the region.

Having been partnered with Volvo for over 30 years, we’ve expanded operations from our depot in Exeter to bases in Plymouth and Redruth allowing us to cover the entire south-west. Our new depot is now open in Roche as our business continues to grow. Replacing the depot in Redruth this larger, highly equipped site will serve the customers of Cornwall and surrounding areas with the same level of professionalism our customers have come to expect from Stuarts.

Family business

The Stuarts family have been running the business since the early 1940s when Mr Alf Stuart bought his first second-hand truck for transporting cattle.

Today, after many developments, the company remains in Stuart hands and we’ve expanded our remit to expand the cattle farming, agricultural contracting, inert Landfill, recycling and skip Hire, as well as the purchase and letting of business units and much more in the pipeline.

We continue to provide an excellent service to Devon and Cornwall in the various services that we provide, with our operation as a truck and bus dealership now earning national plaudits.

Being committed to providing businesses in the area with quality trucks pays dividends and it’s testament to the hard work carried out by the team at Stuarts that recognition should come as the premier Volvo truck supplier of 2018.

We look forward to another successful year of continuing to give the West Country excellent service in sales and repair, alongside our many other ventures.

Happy Customers are the key!

Here at Stuart’s we place the highest value on long-term customer satisfaction and believe that building strong relationships over a period of time is the best way to do business.

We’re delighted to have been recognised as Volvo’s best truck dealers and look forward to continuing giving our customers the fantastic service that helped us win this award.
