Important Environment Agency Updates
WE HAVE SOME IMPORTANT UPDATES FROM THE ENVIRONMENTAL AGENCY ABOUT WASTE UPHOLSTERED DOMESTIC SEATING CONTAINING PERSISTENT ORGANIC POLLUTANTS (POPS)
We just wanted to update you regarding the Environment Agency communication that outlines the banning of re-using recycling and disposal to landfill of waste domestic seating due to the likely presence of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).
We know many of our clients are already aware of this information however EMS are in a position where we must change our procedures to be able to keep accepting this material.
POPs remain intact in the environment for extended periods and if not disposed of properly become widely distributed geographically. They accumulate in the fatty tissue of humans and wildlife and have harmful impacts on human health and on the environment.
The term ‘Domestic Seating Waste’ is to include sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, kitchen and dining room chairs, stools and foot stools, home office chairs, futons, bean bags, floor, and sofa cusions.
This includes items with any part made of or containing leather, synthetic leather, other fabric, or foam.
If an item of domestic seating waste is upholstered you should
assume that it contains POPs and manage it as POPs waste.
THESE NEW RULINGS BECOME EFFECTIVE FROM 1 ST FEBRUARY 2023
All domestic seating coming into EMS will have to be separated. You can no longer bring in domestic seating as mixed waste with other waste streams. This waste stream can no longer be re-used, recycled, or landfilled and the material will be sent to incineration to be destroyed.
The waste must be described on waste transfer notes as ‘Domestic Seating Containing POPs’ with EWC code 20 03 07 used.
You must clearly identify the presence of POPs in your description and should identify the following chemicals. You may rely on the information below and are not expected to undertake additional sampling.
- Decabromodiphenyl Ether (DecaBDE) – This is the most common
- Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD)
- Pentabromodipheny Ether (PenaBDE)
- Tetrabromodiphenyl Ether (TetraBDE)
- Antimony Trioxide
- Medium Chain Chlorinated Paraffins (MCCP)
Each EMS depot will have a separate bin/bay where this waste will be stored prior toincineration.
The gate fee for this material will be £275.00p/t with a minimum ½ tonne charge over ourweighbridge. If you wish to have skips/roros for this material the same tonnage charge will apply with a minimum 2 tonne charge plus our zoned haulage prices.
